Ahimsa Vrat (Non-Violence Vow) - Jain way of life
Ahimsa is the first and most important of the five Jain vows. While monks observe it absolutely (Mahavrat), laypeople observe it partially (Anuvrat). It extends beyond physical harm to include mental violence (ill thoughts), verbal violence (harsh speech), and indirect violence (supporting others who harm). Jains go to extraordinary lengths — sweeping paths, wearing mouth covers, filtering water — to avoid harming even microscopic life.
Ahimsa is the supreme dharma in Jainism. "Parasparopagraho Jivanam" — all life is interdependent. Harming any being is harming oneself.
